Wow. Besides the whole "That's better than I can do" hyperbole, that's actually quite good. While I'm sure some would comment (not here, just in general) about the lack of photo realism in art, that is not what these cats are to her. They are representations of what she sees, and show quite a bit of personal artistic style.

I've seen art by "real" artists that doesn't have as much stylization. While I'm sure that you already are, this seems like a talent that should be nurtured and encouraged. I can only hope my own child has a talent like this we can recognize early.

Very nice.

I'm actually impressed myself. Though you could attribute the animals having human-like features to the rash of films that have CG-ed creatures whose faces act like ours, her use of it is very interesting. She's actually showing a relationship among the cats in the picture.

Additionally, I've never met any 9-year-old who knew how to cross-hatch AND use it appropriately. Nicely done Maya.

Thanks, folks. I just mentioned to Maya that I had posted this. She sort of squinted and asked, "Which one?" I told her and she pursed her lips, seemingly doubting my judgment... And the truth is she has so much good stuff it's hard for me to keep up with it!

Both Maya and Sage end each evening with an hour or so of listening to books on cd and drawing in bed. Yes, we very much support it!

My cat obsessed 3-year-old would go ga ga over that picture. And did your blog change formats, or is my computer just playing Jedi mind tricks on me?

Yes, yes, the blog has been updated to fit in better with the website theme. I should post about that. Shawn Speakman's been at it again!

Thanks. I'll tell her "A Cat of Impossible Colour" said so. She'll make a face and say, "Huh?"

And then she'll be pleased.
