How Old Is This Guy?

Hint: He's a year older today than he was yesterday.

No wiser for it, though...

Happy Birthday! Just discovered your blog through a link at the Swivet. I've seen Acacia in the stores but will definitely pick it up now. I've just spent the past hour going through various posts.

Of special and personal interest to me was your post "I think she wanted a curry." Very insightful and you put into words some of the thoughts I've had on this very subject.

Great blog and I look forward to reading Acacia.

Prince Balthazar,

Thanks for stopping in. Wow, that's a lovely shout out Colleen gave me! Thanks for pointing it out. I'll have to drop her a thank you email.

I gotta say that I also really dug some of the stuff in your profile. Like...

"For years, I tried to write literary fiction, but then I said to myself: Self, you should write what you loved as a kid: fantasy. So with that revelation, I began writing fantasy..."

Yep, I know that route. In my case I DID publish and get a literary career going, but that switch back to writing that's inspired by the fantasy love I had as a kid was really, really important to me.

Also, you like Portishead? Very cool. As was this...

* Favorite Authors would be:
* Philip Pullman
* Tolkien
* Martin Amis
* James Salter
* James Baldwin
* Margaret Atwood
* Patricia Highsmith
* Garth Nix
* Francine Prose
* John Irving
* Paul Auster
* Anne Rice
* and of course you when your book comes out.

Nicely diverse list. Bodes well for your writing future, by the way...

Oh him? He's ancient but very well kept.

Happy birthday!

Thanks, Mary. ;)

Yes, ancient indeed. I still get carded buying alcohol, though. It used to be a compliment, but lately the checkers scoff, guffaw and look embarrassed when they see my birth date.

I guess there's still a compliment in that, but their incredulity muddies the water a bit...

Thanks, David.

I saw that you used to live in Maryland. My wife and I are in Chicago now, but we used to live in Baltimore.(Bawlmer, hon!)

I always thought I would try to get into the Writing Seminars at JHU but I didn't have the academic background. I'm sure you're familiar with some of those writers/teachers: Stephen Dixon, John Barth, Madison Smart Bell.

I'm pretty much self-taught but think I'm doing pretty well with the support of my crit group. I plan to start querying soon.

I'll be sure to stop by now and then.

Cheers,

Ron

Ron,

A Baltimoron. Nice. At least we've got diverse taste in music. Tricky. Goldfrapp. Gotan Project.

Good stuff.

And, yes, I do know all about that Hopkins folks. I'll leave that at that.

Best,

David.

Bon anniversaire, David !
Santé et prospérité, et toutes ces choses, as we say around here.

A bottle of champagne (or two) waiting for you in old Paris, of course.

You have more than your birthday to celebrate, this year !

Best

Hi John! Thank you much, sir. And congrats on your THREE Hugo nominations!

Etan Iktho,

Read any good books lately?

Gudrun,

No, you can't play. Shouldn't you be putting together my birthday fondue right about now? I'm gonna walk over and find out...

Hey, Happy B-Day! That reminds me, I gotta call my sister. (It was her B-Day a few days ago.)

Enjoy the Fondue!

Maybe it's stealth wiser you got - you just don't realize it until you look back - next year. :)

I think the "wiser" part is a vast deception perpetrated by nature :)

Well...

About the latest book I read...

If I said anything about it, you know how it goes, I would have to kill all your friends here who are reading. Because I swore my lips and fingers are sealed(try to guess how you seal fingers, mmh ?).

So I won't say anything.

Except that it is real good stuff (Lucky me, lucky you, and lucky every dolby soon).

Sorry, my fingers were not so sealed, after all.

I could use a big pot of melted cheese right now myself... Maybe I'll have to make do with Nachos tonight.

As for wisdom... as long as you're still learning from your kids, everything's fine. :)

My best, as always,
Bryan

Etan Iktho,

Good. It makes me happy that you've found a good book to read. ;)

Everyone else,

Sorry for that cryptic exchange. A little mystery is a good thing, though, I think.

Bryan,

The pot of melted cheese was very nice. It might even have been better than nachos...

I missed your birthday?? No!

I've been immersed in a writing binge, battered black and blue by this story I'm trying to finish, pretty oblivious. I'm sorry.

Happy belated Birthday to you, our David. I'll be heading into the kitchen now to toast you with a nice, tall mimosa.

Thanks, Stephe!

Glad to hear you've been deep in the writing. And it's good to hear that your fiction is beating up on you - AND that you're not giving up on it.

-David.
