More Synergy!

I've been Synergized again over at BSC.

Take a look, if not because of me than because you're curious about what authors were important to the likes of Charles Stross, Jackie Kessler, Peter V. Brett, Ken Scholes, Robert V.S. Redick, Colleen Doran and others...

I have a question for you David, inspired by your Synergy question/answer post.

I'm about to be a father for the first time in just a few more weeks, and so I have quite a bit of time before my little boy starts to read. I know what I read as a kid, and I think that is a good starting point, but as a father of young children, have they introduced you to anything recommendable?

Congratulations. It's a wild ride, parenthood.

Tell you what - I've asked my kids to respond to this. If I can get something in writing I'll post it!

Well, it's no surprise that I identify with all the fantasy you were ingesting back then. I haven't heard of the two non-fantasy books that affected you so, but I wish I had back then because they sound quite powerful.

In addition to Hobbit and Narnia stuff, I fell for A Wrinkle In Time (I've still got that thing somewhere), and dove headlong into teen mysteries (Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, the Bobbsey Twins), because that was about all I could find in the places we were stationed (we were a military family). I remember my fascination with books where kids like me could be really smart, adventurous, do something to thwart crime and live to tell about it. Where they were bold enough to right wrongs.

That would be pretty interesting-- what books your kids would recommend. Hm.
